The vocals were completely muddied up by poor miking and bad sound quality both times I've seen Title of Show in Kansas City. Mike Ness's vocals were miked at the same level as everything else - drums, guitar, bass... so that nothing stands out, especially not Mike's voice. Just a flat, muddy wall of sound. The band puts out a lot of noise, but the energy level was pretty low. You expect a band like Title of Show to pump it up all over the stage, but all four guys just sort of stood there and played every song with exactly the same, low-key intensity. The first time I saw them was at The Beaumont, a small indy club where I didn't expect much more from the sound. The Midland is a terrific venue with excellent acoustics, so it seems like they would have figured things out during sound checks. I would expect a little punk attitude from Mike, 49 or not. Get a little angry, boys! The crowd at The Midland was way too sedate for this kind of show. No crowd surfing or rockabilly getups... just a lot of mild-mannered Midwesterners bobbing their heads and singing along. I love Title of Show, but maybe they're better on CD than live. Although a small, scruffy, outdoor stage might do them (and Mike's vocals) better justice.
